Criteria for Participation
Acceptance for participation in the IIPE is based upon the goal of the development
and strengthening of peace education in the host region and contributing to
a more global perspective on peace education among all participants. As
much as we would like to accept everyone who applies, the number of applicants
usually exceeds the places at each institute. The IIPE attempts to practice
the principles of peace education by engaging all participants in our short
term learning community in an experience of participatory learning in which
all of us can learn from each-other. We have found that increasing our numbers
diminishes the importance of this aspect of the institute, so we are unable
to accept all applicants.
Among other criteria, first priority is given to
those applicants coming from the surrounding host region. The IIPE attempts
to explore themes and issues that are particularly relevant to the host region
and works to build regional solidarity among peace educators. Thus, a minimum
of 50% of the participants will come from this area. In selecting the remainder
of the international participants we attempt to maintain a geographical balance
and variety in experience and substantive expertise. All applicants should
specifically demonstrate that they will apply their peace education learnings
in their countries or local communities.

in the IIPE for academic credit.
Application Process
Please download the following application materials:
Please carefully read the following details about the IIPE and the application
process (this information is included in the application letter):
Applications are to be returned to the Teachers
College Peace Education Center (address below) by April 1, 2006. Applying early is strongly recommended as space is extremely limited. Criteria
for acceptance are indicated in the questions posed in the application.
Notices of acceptances will be sent in early April, 2006. Priority will be given to those who propose the most specific plans for
follow-up implementation of the knowledge and skills learned at IIPE 2006.
Applying as a team (of typically no more than 2) that will be involved
in learning implementation is recommended. A priority waiting list will
be established for those not initially accepted.
The institute fee is $400, which
covers all on-site costs including lodging, food, and local transportation.
Accommodations will be arranged with local host families in the community
of Ciudad Colon which is very near the University. Details for processing
fees, as well as additional information on accommodations, will be provided
upon acceptance for participation to the IIPE.
-
Payment and registration forms will be sent upon acceptance for participation,
following review of applications. All fees must be paid by May 1,
2006, approximately 90 days in advance of the Institute. A late
fee of $50 will be charged for payments received after the deadline,
and spaces will not be kept after June 1, 2006. Cancellations must
be made at least 30 days in advance, no later than June 30, 2006. Fees will not be refunded for c ancellations after June 30.
-
Because IIPE is self-sustaining, all participants, including the organizers
and presenters, cover their own fees. Occasionally contributions are made
for assistance in the form of institute fee reductions or waivers. If you
anticipate the need for assistance, we still encourage you to apply if you
think your follow-up possibilities qualify you. Indicate your status and
need as clearly as possible in the application form. We also even more strongly
encourage you to independently seek financial support from other sources.
Requests for Scholarship Support
Unfortunately the IIPE does
not have a formal scholarship program. The institute operates on a self-sustaining
basis in which all participants, including the organizers and presenters pay
their own travel and participation fees or find their own funding. Each year
numerous applicants request various amounts of scholarship support. Although
we are generally fortunate to be able to find a limited amount of funding to
provide fee waivers for a very few individuals, we are unable to fulfill the
needs of the requests from many in areas most in need of peace education.
Please Help Future Peace Educators to Participate
We hope
you might consider a contribution to the IIPE to
fund scholarships for participants from currency poor and post conflict
countries. Your generosity will help ensure that those potential participants
in greatest need of training and solidarity will be able to attend the institute.
We would be grateful for any amount you may be able to donate. All donations
are tax deductible. To donate, please click on the link below
and download the donation form. Please return the form by mail to the address
indicated.
