What refugees really need to start anew / Lo que los refugiados necesitan para empezar de nuevo

The number of refugees and displaced peoples around the world continues to increase at ever alarming rates, with no signs of slowing down. Many international aid/support organizations are accustomed to addressing refugee issues in manners that no longer hold up to stronger governments where current refugees often flock to; many governments try to find ways to say ‘yes, but,’ when called on their signatures of the UDHR. I argue that more should be done to work with displaced people while maintaining hope and dignity as they start anew. This last point I believe can be done through joy, growing self-confidence and being supported with respect, working together with INGOs, local governments, local NGOs and of course the displaced people themselves.. I will elicit examples from the audience as well as offer a few of my own.

El número de refugiados y personas desplazadas en todo el mundo sigue subiendo cada dia, a un ritmo alarmante, sin signos de desaceleración. Muchas organizaciones internacionales de ayuda/apoyo están acostumbradas a abordar los problemas de los refugiados de maneras que ya no sirven a gobiernos más fuertes en paises adonde refugiados ahora pasan; muchos gobiernos intentan encontrar formas de decir 'sí, pero' cuando se les acuerden que ha firmaba la DUDH. Yo digo que hay que ser más que esta hecho para trabajar con las personas desplazadas mientras se mantiene la esperanza y la dignidad a medida que comienzan de nuevo. Creo que este último punto se puede lograr con alegría, aumentando la confianza en uno mismo y recibiendo apoyo con respeto, trabajando junto con las ONG internacionales, los gobiernos locales, las ONG locales y, por supuesto, las propias personas desplazadas. I have been working in Turkey since 1989, at either the university level and/or under the broad umbrella of civil society; I established the first required program for Civic Participation at the university level in Turkey; I was the first Country Representative for Ashoka in Turkey. I was one of the Coordinators of IIPE 2004 in Istanbul:-) I am the founder of çöp(m)adam-, a social enterprise for women who have never worked for salary, making items out of throw-away materials for income generation. I took a break from cop(m)adam in 2017 and was Field Manager for Yuva Dernek, working near the Syrian Border with refugees; subsequently I worked with refugees on the Greek Island of Lesvos.   I've been a consultant in Lebanon, Afghanistan, The UAE and with UNDP in Turkey.

Estoy trabajando en Turquía desde 1989, ya sea en la universidad o bajo el ancho título de la sociedad civil - o los dos; Establecí el primer programa obligatorio de Participación Cívica a nivel universitario en Turquía; Fui el primer representante de país de Ashoka en Turquía. He sido consultor en Líbano, Afganistán, los Emiratos Árabes Unidos y con el PNUD en Turquía.
