Nonviolent Action in Defense of Water Rights in Michigan / Acción noviolenta en defensa de los derechos de agua en Michigan

The presentation focuses on justice struggles in Detroit. Drawing on King’s idea of World House and Beloved Community, activists have come together to try to create a different and better local reality. The presentation especially focuses on how water shut-offs in Detroit have been challenged and stopped by human rights groups and by concerted acts of civil disobedience. Michigan chapters of the Poor People’s Campaign also dramatized the need for change in Detroit. While COVID relief money and a temporary moratorium have stopped shut-offs during the Covid-19 pandemic, activists are still struggling with local government to get a plan in place that can solve the problem sustainably. Michigan environmental activists mobilize to ensure the Great Lakes as a key fresh water source are not jeopardized by pipelines and private companies. Michigan’s water struggles to ensure water as a human right share some similarities to other water struggles around the world.

Gail M. Presbey is Professor of Philosophy at University of Detroit Mercy, and Director of the James Carney Latin American Solidarity Archives. Her areas of expertise are philosophy of nonviolence and African philosophy, with current studies and research on Africa, Latin America, Mohandas Gandhi’s movement, feminism, and Pan-Africanism. She engages in interdisciplinary work that involves philosophy, world history, oral history, and political theory. She has researched in Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, India, and Brazil, having received several Fulbright grants. She has four edited books and over fifty articles and book chapters published. She has an MA and PhD in Philosophy from Fordham University, and an MA in World History from Wayne State University. She has been Executive Director and then President of Concerned Philosophers for Peace (2003-2010). She is currently Secretary of the Peace History Society. Visit her home page at
